Same-sex marriage is coming to New York. Oh, not the stand in front of a justice of the peace kind; that’s been legal for months. No, I’m talking about a tide of plays and theatrical events delving into the issues, joys and controversies surrounding the battle for gay marriage in the United States.

Producers announced this morning an official Off-Broadway run for Standing on Ceremony: ´╗┐The Gay Marriage Plays directed by Stuart Ross. Starting October 18, this “theatrical event” will feature a series of short plays (from acclaimed playwrights including Moises Kaufman, Neil Labute, Paul Rudnik and Doug Wright) that celebrate ” the courage to be in a relationship — any relationship.”

Leading the charge, though, is the star-studded benefit reading of Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black’s take on the Proposition 8 controversy in California entitled 8 on September 19. The one-night-only event recently announced final casting, adding Rory O’Malley (The Book of Mormon) and Campbell Brown (CNN) to the already slated mix of Cheyenne Jackson, Marisa Tomei and more.
