THEATER BUFF: Thayne Jasperson of “Newsies”
Every third Wednesday, a fabulous actor/singer/dancer will fill out my nosey little questionnaire and offer a glimpse of what they look like from a bit closer than the mezzanine. For August, we’re getting real (and reality show) with a headline grabbing man of the month…
Name: Thayne Jasperson
Hometown: Evanston WY/ Springville UT ( I grew up in both so I never know what to say.) I was raised a country boy.
Current Show/Role: Darcy/Jo Jo (short for Jorgelino Josefino De La Guerra)/Newsies.
The best part of the show I’m in now is: It’s about us. So it’s meaty for the Newsie ensemble. We dance hard, sing crazy high and are present the whole show. I love it!
The most challenging job in show business I ever had was: So You Think You Can Dance — you’re always at risk of being sent home. You have to create a new solo every time you’re in the bottom 3. No dance space to rehearse. Pressured for time. Live results show for millions of viewers. Crazy but amazing experience.
If I wasn’t an actor, I would be: choreographer/teacher… Or a traveling gypsy seeing the world piece by piece. I love travel.
Places, Intermission or Curtain Call? Definitely not curtain call; it’s the hardest dancing in our show for me. Probably Places. I have the prologue where I’m alone in the dressing room. I often meditate on life and this fantastic experience, warm up, sing along to “Santa Fe”…
The best pre-show dinner and post-shot cocktail in town are at: I don’t drink, but gimme some thick, rich, store-bought chocolate milk and I’m elated! Food: sushi or anywhere with a hearty chicken and vegetable spinach salad… And an almost doughy cookie.
After you’ve hit all the traditional sights of New York City, you should totally go to: Washington square park. It’s like an urban ethereal world in there. I can escape life for a minute.
If I could live anywhere else in the world it would be: on my own giant yacht. I don’t like to be too stagnant. That way I could port where I feel and I’d cross international waters often.
My favorite summer vacation ever was: I have too many for a favorite. But one I loved was Cancun with my best friend. We stayed in a mini apartment right where the locals lived. We ate, lived and partied like them. Swam in the ocean and in a fresh water cenote (cave) that appeared to be from the movie Avatar. We climbed ancient ruins and visited spiritual grounds of the Native Americans. Cracked a coconut from a tree with our bare hands and devoured the whole thing. Pet and basically held a 7 foot nurse shark. Danced in the warm rain. Tried to hitch hike unsuccessfully. It was an adventure.
My workout “secret” is: I eat sort of healthy but snack heavily. I love cookies, chocolate and natural peanut butter. So I dance harder if I eat worse. But I really should work on that…
When I’m looking for a date, nothing attracts me more than: passionate, positive, low maintenance people. I don’t like drama. I like someone with drive in whatever they do and to be ok with camping, adventure, movies and dollar pizza.
My favorite website to visit that you may not have heard of is: hmmm. Don’t have one. But I like searching 80’s and 90’s cartoons on YouTube. Brings me back to childhood with a bowl of cereal on Saturday mornings.
Board Shorts, Speedo or Skinny Dip? Skinny dip if possible! Otherwise board shorts for sure. I sometimes wear ‘em as my summer attire.
People would be surprised to learn that: I like to fold my ears in when they’re cold. As long as I can remember I’ve done that. But if they’re warm…forget about it.
When I was 10, I wanted to be just like: Peter Pan. I don’t want to grow up. Who doesn’t want to fly, play games and live in a magical land hidden in the galaxy?
Ten years from now, I’d like to be: still alive and able to walk. Newsies ain’t easy kids.
In honor of the Dog Days of Summer, pick a “Dog”: French bull dogs! I love them. Stout little wrestler looking dogs with an extremely happy looking face. Every time I see one they come right up to cuddle or lick my face. They melt me.
