Every third Wednesday (hump day of the hump week), a fabulous actor/singer/dancer currently on Broadway will fill out my nosey little questionnaire and offer a glimpse of what they look like from a bit closer than the mezzanine. And Mr. April is…
Name: Nick Kenkel
Hometown: South Bend, Indiana
Current Show/Role: Catch Me If You Can – Associate Choreographer/Dance Captain/Swing
The best part of the show I’m in now is: It has some beautiful power ballads that will give you chills and make you feel some genuine emotions about love, life, and regret. 2nd best: When I go on I get to be a handsome dancing man and not a cartoon, animal, or glorified prop.
The worst job in show business I ever had was: I danced for two Bat Mitzfah parties …and swore never again. Got tricked into doing another one last Halloween damnit.
If I wasn’t an actor, I would be: An accountant. I was an accountant before; a C.P.A for Arthur Andersen before the Enron scandal took down the firm. Thank God, for opportunities that present themselves to pursue your dreams!
Cape, mask or spandex tights? Cape, I wanted to fly when I was a kid.
The best post-show cocktail in town is at: Sosa Borella has a great Pinot Noir that often finds its way into my hands.
After you’ve hit all the traditional sites of New York City, you should totally go to: The piers on the west side highway! I love running down the west side and visiting all the parks on the piers. It is so relaxing and invigorating and helps to center me. Seeing all the athletic bodies out and about isn’t too bad either.
If I could live anywhere else in the world it would be: London! But more realistically, I’d like to be closer to my family. Probably Chicago is more realistic. I love it there; great dance community.
Board shorts, speedo or skinny dip? Board shorts for walking around, speedo for tanning and swimming, and skinny dip while in the hot tub.
My workout “secret” is: Don’t try to do too much, do what you can do that day or else you will get burned out. Do abs in between lifting exercises.
When I’m looking for a date, nothing attracts me more than: An honest man….there is a lack of them. Or at least a few are completely misrepresenting the whole.
When I’m web surfing, the site I’m most likely to be on is: Facebook; guilt sets in now.
Vampires, Werewolves or Zombies? Vampires.
People would be surprised to learn that I: grew up racing horses in the country. And was a former auditor (see above).
When I was 10, I wanted to be just like: Michael Jackson. Dancing in a hot suit on stage at night with black fedora in hand ..brings it all full circle.
Ten years from now, I’d like to be: Able to earn a living by doing what I love to do and surrounded by artistic and talented people. Kind of like now. I am so blessed.
Breakfast in bed or midnight snack? Both, dancers are always hungry.
