Bienvenido! You’re invited to the exceptional, fantastical Casa Madrigal. That magical home is the centerpiece of Disney’s new animated musical film Encanto, which dropped a new trailer on Thursday, July 8. The film features music by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Encanto is the tale of an extraordinary family, the Madrigals, who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a magical house, in a vibrant town, in a wondrous, charmed place called an Encanto. The all-new original film features the voice of Stephanie Beatriz as Mirabel, an ordinary 15-year-old who’s struggling to find her place in her family. “Mirabel is a really funny, loving character who also deeply yearns for something more,” says Beatriz. “She’s also not afraid to stand up for what she knows is right — something I love and relate to very much.
Residents of Casa Madrigal all have special talents — except Mirabel. This trope follows a long lineage of plot points for Disney films in which the central character is some kind of outsider, longing to fit in but discovering the beauty of their identity nonetheless as part of their maturation.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on November 24, 2021, and will feature eight original songs by Hamilton‘s Miranda that will be performed in both Spanish and English. Byron Howard and Jared Bush direct the film that has an original screenplay by Bush and Charise Castro Smith. Watch the trailer for the exciting new film below!
