It’s official! The rumored revival of Stephen Sondheim’s macabre masterpiece Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was confirmed this morning following weeks of speculation. Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford will lead the revival, which begins previews February 26, 2023 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre ahead of an opening on March 26.
Thomas Kail (Hamilton, In The Heights) will direct the large-scale production, which is set to include a 26-member orchestra. It will be the first time since 1980 that Jonathan Tunick’s original orchestrations will be played in a Broadway house. Jeffrey Seller is the producer.
Sweeney Todd features music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, based on an earlier play of the same name by Christopher Bond. The musical debuted on Broadway in 1979 in a production starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury. It has been revived several times on and Off Broadway, most recently at Greenwich House Theater in an immersive production set within a constructed pie shop.
Set in Victorian London, Sweeney Todd tells the tale of a murderous, revenge-seeking barber and his pie-baking accomplice Mrs. Lovett, who uses her culinary skills to dispose of Sweeney’s victims.
Tony winner Alex Lacamoire will serve as Music Supervisor, and Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett choreographs with set design by Tony Award winner Mimi Lien, costume design by Tony Award nominee Emilio Sosa, lighting design by seven-time Tony Award winner Natasha Katz and sound design by Tony Award winner Nevin Steinberg. Casting is by The Telsey Office. Baseline Theatrical serves as General Manager. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
Tickets for Sweeney Todd are now on sale exclusively for American Express Card Members. American Express Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public through Friday September 16. General on-sale begins September 16 at 10 AM, with tickets available through Ticketmaster.
