Laura Benanti as Melania Trump on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.’ (YouTube: ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’)
Laura Benanti has 12 Broadway credits to her name, not to mention a Tony Award on her shelf for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance of Louise in the 2008 revival of Gypsy. But the past four years have put her in the spotlight for another reason — as a hilarious impersonator of first lady Melania Trump.
Benanti joked in March 2016 on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that she’d have a second career as an impersonator. Not that she needed it, but that’s precisely what happened when Colbert called upon the star to embody the first lady throughout Trump’s term.
Benanti paid tribute to New York City and kissed the Trump administration goodbye in one final satirical production number, inspired by “Belle” from Beauty and the Beast. Have a watch!
