Fireworks may light up the sky tonight, but July 4th also gives us the opportunity to reflect on some of our favorite patriotic musicals… take a look!
1776
It doesn’t get much more American than the 1969 Broadway production of 1776 by Peter Stone (book) and Sherman Edwards (music and lyrics), which recounts the harrowing days leading up to the Declaration of Independence. It was made into a film in 1972.
George M!
The Tony Award-winning musical starred Joel Grey, and although it followed the life and times of Broadway and Vaudeville star George M. Cohan, its stars and stripes shined brights with numbers including “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “Yankee Doodle Dandy.”
The Civil War
The 1999 Broadway production was short-lived, but musical theater aficionados are still fans of Frank Wildhorn’s epic score.
Grease 2
Though it wasn’t on Broadway and tanked at the box office, this sequel to Grease does feature one number that we couldn’t resist including… “Let’s Do It For Our Country.”
