When it comes to theater there’s always something exciting taking place. This week’s news was filled with wonderful plays and performances just opened, or waiting in the wings.
My all-time favorite show RENT, which introduced many people to queer culture with upbeat songs about living life for today, returned to the stage August 11. Now, those who missed the award-winning show the first time on The Great White Way will have the opportunity to experience Jonathan Larson’s masterpiece.
What’s better than a musical focused on fetish-footwear! Playbill has announced that Cyndi Lauper’s scored musical Kinky Boots the Musical is getting an Equity staged reading September 23-October 6. The film which the musical is based on features a drag-performed who, with a little kink and class, tries to save a failing shoe company.
Famed drag-performer Joey Arias brings Arias with a Twist to life, with a plot and costumes that are out of the world. The not-to-miss show celebrates the bizarre with a blending of music, puppets, and Joey’s personal twist. The show runs from September 14-October 15. The staged reading follows the story of the legalization of same-sex marriage in California, and Proposition 8, which banned it, once again. Look for an all-star cast, including Anthony Edwards, Morgan Freeman, and Cheyenne Jackson. After the Broadway reading, the play will be licensed to schools and community organizations to spread the message throughout the USA.
Judy Gold’s summer show The Judy Show: My Life as a Sitcom follows her as a Jewish, lesbian mother and the hilarious situations from her life; the show was as instant success, as reported in The Village Voice. Originally, it was going to end early September, but the show’s popularity was too much for that time frame; the new ending date is October 22.
