THEATER BUFF: Alec Varcas of “50 Shades! The Musical”

Current Show/Role: 50 Shades! The Musical / Elliot

The best part of the show I’m working on now is: The Cast. Everyone in the show is so funny and talented that I can’t help but have a great time when I come to work.

The most challenging job in show business I ever had was: My first paid job when I was 18. I got called in by a local theater that was having a crisis with someone leaving the show; therefore they needed someone to step in. I decided to do the show, started rehearsing at 4pm on a Friday, and went on at 8pm that night. I was so nervous and stressed out, but it surprisingly went very well.

If I wasn’t a performer, I would be: An Entrepreneur. I have my degree in marketing and have always been interested in business. I would love watching my ideas come to life, starting my own business, and being creative designing new products/services.

Places, Intermission or Curtain Call?: Places! I love when we are about to do the show, especially when I have friends in the audience or I can tell the audience is going to enjoy it.

The best post-show cocktail in New York City is at: I don’t go out drinking very much, but I sometimes like to hit up Blockheads for a burrito and margarita after a two-show day.

After you’ve hit all the traditional sites of New York City, you should totally go to: the PIT (People’s Improv Theatre). I went to go see two of my cast members do an improv show one night with their group Baby Wants Candy and I was blown away. I had so much fun and had not laughed that hard in a long time. The talent was incredible, the tickets are cheap, and it was one of the best nights I have had in NYC so far.

If I could live anywhere else in the world it would be: New Zealand. I have never been, but it is the one place in the world I want to visit the most. Every picture I have seen is beautiful.

Spring has sprung; what spring event or opening in NYC are you most looking forward to? I cant wait to walk Highline Park. I have only been once about two years ago and I cant wait to go back.

My workout “secret” is: Make small goals. I have learned that by making small goals like adding 10 more pounds to my bench press, or being able to do one more pullup, or even learning a new exercise or taking a new fitness class, you become happier and more driven to keep pushing yourself. Setting hard, long term goals just makes it difficult to motivate yourself because you aren’t reaching those goals quickly. My other workout secret is to eat peanut butter if you want to put on good weight. Add a serving or two of peanut butter to your diet and you will be gaining weight in no time 😉

When I’m looking for a date, nothing attracts me more than: Humor and a nice smile. If you can make me laugh and if you can laugh at yourself, we will definitely get along.

My favorite website to visit that you may not have heard of is: corestrengthblog.wordpress.com ! Yes, I am plugging my own website right now. I have a fitness blog with some exercise and diet tips for people who may want a little extra advice on how to get that summer body.

Board shorts, speedo or skinny dip? Speedo or Trunks. What can I say, I like my legs to be tan. I just got some new swimsuits from T.Christopher and I’m obsessed with them.

People would be surprised to learn that I: have a phobia of fingers. I hate when fingers bend backward.

When I was 10, I wanted to be just like: John Travolta. I watched Grease probably over 50 times and would reenact the musical numbers with my sister.

Ten years from now I’d like to be: Happy and successful. I don’t know what the future has in store for me, but I do know that I am open to all new possibilities. I would love to explore the world, meet new people and try new things.

It’s April; pick a shower: gym shower, meteor shower, baby shower? Meteor Shower. When I was younger, my entire neighborhood would go to the end of the street, put out chairs, bring a lot of food, and we would watch the sky during a meteor shower. Those are some of my favorite memories I have.
