One Wednesday a month, a fabulous actor/singer/dancer fills out contributor Tom Mizer’s nosey little questionnaire and offers a glimpse of what he looks like from a bit closer than the mezzanine. For July, we’re feeling the heat with our talented man of the month and getting a jump on things as our theater buff takes over the role of “Tom” in Murder Ballad through July 18.
Name: Jim Newman
Hometown: Center Point, Alabama
Current Show/Role: Tom in Murder Ballad
The best part of the show I’m in now is: The score is fantastic. Love singing this music and our band is kick ass!
The most challenging job in show business I ever had was: Curtains. Emotionally it was tough because I was back on a chorus contract after 12 years of Principal contracts and I was really focusing on being grateful and knowing that I’m a grown-up and have bills to pay but the ego is a little devil on your shoulder and it has a lot of influence.
If I wasn’t an actor, I would be: Really frustrated that I wanted to be an actor and was doing something else.
Places, Intermission or Curtain Call? A few shows it was definitely Curtain Call but generally I’m a Places man.
The best pre-show dinner and post-shot cocktail in town are at: Classic Joe Allen’s preshow. Gym shorts, two folding chairs, a bottle of Pinot Noir and my roof terrace after.
After you’ve hit all the traditional sights of New York City, you should totally go to: Walk the High Line, slice of Nona Maria at Bleecker Street pizza and the Tenement Museum on the lower east side.
If I could live anywhere else in the world it would be: Barcelona. I will live there for a sabbatical one day.
It’s getting sweaty out there; what’s your favorite way to beat the summer heat? Go commando. Also an afternoon movie. Maybe go commando to an afternoon movie.
My workout “secret” is: A go-go dancer from Splash is my workout partner.
When I’m looking for a date, nothing attracts me more than: Money and power. Also a great face and ass.
My favorite website to visit that you may not have heard of is: Called Facebook. It’s about to blow up so keep your eyes open for it.
Board Shorts, Speedo or Skinny Dip? Board shorts to begin, then I take them off and wrap them around my wrist.
People would be surprised to learn that I: Dress like a nine year old boy. My clothes always match and when they don’t it’s because I was trying really really hard to pretend that I don’t care what I wear.
Ten years from now I’d like to be: Wealthy enough to know that if I’m single I can afford hot guys. Or at least have a sweet rescue dog that cuddles but doesn’t have bad dog breath.
When I was 10, I wanted to be just like: The six million dollar man. Bionics were the future.
The best summer vacation I ever took was: Barcelona. Dinner at 11:30 meeting friendly people who took us to the cool clubs and ending up at a foam party at 5:00 am then getting on our mopeds as the sun came up and riding to the beach stripping down and jumping in the ocean to wash off the suds then breakfast then sleep until 2:00. Heaven.
Jim will appear as “Tom” in Murder Ballad through July 18. The show runs through July 21 at The Union Square Theatre.
