Every third Wednesday of the month, a fabulous actor/singer/dancer fills out contributor Tom Mizer’s nosey little questionnaire and offers a glimpse of what he looks like from a bit closer than the mezzanine. For December, we’ve got a very special (and seriously smart) package under the tree…
Name: Nicolas Maffey
Hometown: Buenos Aires, Argentina
Current Show/Role: Turkish Delight (hand-balancer) and aerialist in Nutcracker Rouge by Company XIV.
The best part of the show I’m in now is: Without a doubt, the cast and crew. What makes Company XIV so unique is the integration of different talents. The circus artists, dancers, singers, designers, make-up artists are amazing at what they do, and when combined together, the result is extraordinary. Also, everyone is super fun, kind, and genuinely committed to our show. We love working together and the positive energy backstage helps me enjoy and give my all to the show.
The most challenging job in show business I ever had was: Being a nightlife performer definitely presents you with new challenges. Before doing Nutcracker Rouge I performed in several different venues and clubs in NYC. The energy that you usually get from the audience is very different, shows are really late, and you are working with a different crew every time, so each performance is completely different.
If I wasn’t a performer, I would be: Probably a vet! This past May I graduated from Harvard University with a BA in Biology and hope to continue my studies in the future. I am a total science nerd and absolutely love animals so I think I would be a pretty good vet!
The Nutcracker is often the first show people see as a child; what was your first theater/ballet/opera experience? The first ballet that I saw was actually Swan Lake when I was eight and it had a huge impact on me. I remember being really mesmerized by how their bodies moved and the theatricality that they accomplished without saying a word. I connected with the dancers very deeply and although I was really young, it was definitely one of my first realizations that I wanted to be a performer, and that I wanted to use my body as my instrument for expression.
After you’ve hit all the traditional sights of New York City, you should totally go to: See at least one of the many burlesque shows that NYC has to offer!
If I could live anywhere else in the world it would be: Probably back in Buenos Aires since that’s where my dogs and family are. However, I lived in Paris for a summer and I had a fantastic experience so I am hoping to come back.
Winter getaway: Sand, Ski or City? Definitely sand, preferably somewhere in the Caribbean.
My workout “secret” is: My playlist.
When I’m looking for a date, nothing attracts me more than: Someone that is experienced, smart, and interesting. I could never date someone boring.
My favorite website to visit that you may not have heard of is: Science Daily has some really cool and short articles that will keep you up-to-date with the latest scientific discoveries!
Boxer, Brief or Commando? Boxer briefs, for sure.
People would be surprised to learn that I: Grew up in a farm! Before moving to the city, I lived in a small farm where I would ride horses, milk cows, climb trees, and play with my dogs. It was a super simple and relaxing lifestyle. Whenever I am back, I try to get away from the urban craziness and enjoy some downtime at the farm. Also, I never learned how to drive.
Ten years from now I’d like to be: Doing what I love, healthy and happy.
When I was 10, I wanted to be just like: James Bond
Pick a Holly for the Holly-days: Holly Golightly, Holly Hunter or Holly Hobby? Holly Golightly
