Despite a limited number of nominees due to Broadway’s pandemic shutdown, The Broadway League managed to pull off a four-hour epic evening of awards, performances and tributes to mark the 74th annual Tony Awards.
Most of the awards were presented in a two-hour special hosted by Audra McDonald on Paramount+, where Slave Play, the most-nominated play in Broadway’s history, went home empty-handed. Moulin Rouge: The Musical racked up most of the awards in the musical category, with a few noticeable exceptions, including Adrienne Warren for Tina – The Tina Turner Musical (Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical) and Lauren Patton (Best Performace by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical). Patton used her platform to call out the recent controversy surrounding the show regarding its nonbinary representation and treatment of nonbinary cast members.
The second half of the evening, hosted by Leslie Odam, Jr., was more concert than an awards ceremony, saving a few of the big wins but mostly relying on the CBS broadcast to promote Broadway’s return. Highlights included duets from Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell (Ragtime) and Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel (Wicked). Check out the complete list of winners:
